  344.      WP61/60 install instructions.

  346.      Short version of the WP6x instructions: From inside WP6, press
  347.      Macro (Alt-F10), type the current path to the install.wpm file,
  348.      and 'install', and press Enter. 
  349.      (Example: Macro (Alt-F10), a:\install, Enter).

  351.      2) From inside WP, press Macro (Alt-F10), type 'GRAPHCAT' & press
  352.      Enter. Follow the on-screen instructions.

  354.      INTRODUCTION

  357.      GRAPHCAT/DOS 3.2 requires EITHER WordPerfect 6.1 or 6.0, any
  358.      release date, or WordPerfect 5.1, interim release date 6/29/90 or
  359.      later. GRAPHCAT is a shareware package of WordPerfect macros that
  360.      read any disk or directory, and create a pictorial listing of all
  361.      the graphics found. After running the INSTALL.WPM macro for WP6
  362.      or SETUP.BAT file for WP51, run the main macro by pressing Macro
  363.      (Alt-F10), and entering GRAPHCAT. Answer the prompts for the
  364.      drive and directory, file extension, catalog title, number of
  365.      columns, and graphic height. The default values for columns and
  366.      height allow 28 graphics per page.

  369.      NEW IN GRAPHCAT 3.2 for WP51

  372.      Since version 3.1, horizontal cataloging (left-to-right) has been
  373.      added.

  375.      These changes have been made in the 5.1 version of Graphcat since
  376.      version 3.00: Added 5.1+ support and full compatibility with the
  377.      DOS Share command, and horizontal (left-to-right) catalogs.

  382.      These enhancements have been made to Graphcat 3.2 since version
  383.      3.00: Added CD-ROM support, horizontal (left-to-right) catalogs,
  384.      directory searching, filename searching, partial catalogs,
  385.      caption autosizing, and it is no longer necessary to avoid the
  386.      "WP Documents Only" setting in file manager.

  393.      To use the new directory searching feature, simply click on the
  394.      `Search' button next to the first prompt on Graphcat's main
  395.      screen, and use the arrow keys to move to the directory to
  396.      search. Use 2) Other Drive to change to another drive letter,
  397.      Home to go to the top of the listing, End to go to the bottom of
  398.      the listing, F2 or N to search, and Enter or 1 to select a
  399.      directory. (Mice do not work inside the search screens.)
  400.  
  401.      To use the new partial catalogs feature, enter your choices in
  402.      the second dialog box, or simply press Enter, or click on OK to
  403.      accept the default choices and begin building the catalog. The
  404.      defaults will usually be to start with the first image found (the
  405.      filename will be blank), and use page number 1 for the first page
  406.      of the catalog. If Graphcat detects that your last catalog was
  407.      not a complete catalog of the directory, it will suggest that you
  408.      start with the next available file name, and a page number that
  409.      will be the next after your previous catalog. You may press Enter
  410.      or click on OK to accept these choices, or click on Search, and
  411.      select a new starting file.
  412.  
  413.      Graphcat will remember your settings from one run of the macro to
  414.      the next, within the same WordPerfect session. If Graphcat
  415.      detects a partial catalog has been created, then you can simply
  416.      press Enter at both dialog boxes to build another catalog of the
  417.      same length and settings as the previous one.
  418.  
  419.      Hint: For partial catalogs, set the number of images equal to
  420.      enough images to fill one or several pages. For example, if you
  421.      use the default settings of 1" and 4 columns, use 28, 56, or 84
  422.      images per catalog. Remember that Graphcat can build catalogs
  423.      that are too big to print on some computers, so break up your
  424.      catalogs so that you can print them easily.
  425.  
  426.      WORDPERFECT 6.1 OR 6.0 OR 5.1 OR 5.1+?
  427.      --------------------------------------
  428.  
  429.      Throughout this manual, when the keystrokes and procedures are
  430.      the same for both WordPerfect versions, the steps will be listed
  431.      only once. However, when the steps are different, you will see
  432.      this:
  433.      WP51: Do these steps in WordPerfect 5.1 or 5.1+
  434.      WP6 : Or these in WordPerfect 6.1 or 6.0.
  435.  
  436.      WordPerfect 6.x has greatly enhanced graphics and macro power, so
  437.      there are a few features available in the WP 6 version of
  438.      Graphcat that are not in the 5.1 edition. The WP6 version has
  439.      these enhancements: 
  440.  
  441.      1) The sort order that you have set in the File Manager is
  442.           the order that your files will be listed in Graphcat.
  443.

  449.           You can choose to sort by filename, extension, size,
  450.           date, and in ascending or descending order.
  451.       
  452.      2) A Graphics-on-Disk option can save workspace--check the
  453.           radio button in the main Graphcat screen to turn it on.
  454.  
  455.      3) All the graphics may be converted to black and white, or
  456.           adjusted in many other ways, by editing the Graphics
  457.           style named "GRAPHCAT" or the Border style named "GCAT-
  458.           BRD". (See the instructions on page 17.)
  459.  
  460.      4) New graphics formats added to WP60, initial release,
  461.           include BMP and WMF. 5) Support for WordPerfect
  462.           Graphics (WPG) includes version 1.0 (WP51), version 1e
  463.           (Presentations 2.0/DOS), and 2.0 (WP6x shipping
  464.           graphics).
  465.  
  466.      NOTE: WP60 does NO LONGER SUPPORTS DHP, GEM, IMG, MSP, PNTG, &
  467.      PPIC. Keep a copy of the GRAPHCNV program from WP51 to convert
  468.      these into WPG format.
  469.  
  470.      ADDITIONAL GRAPHICS DRIVERS: The formats DXF, MGX, and TGA
  471.      require extra conversion drivers--call WP for order info.
  472.  
  473.      TIF FILES: TIF formats through revision 5.0 are supported, except
  474.      those using LZW compression. Some version 6.0 files are
  475.      supported, but not all--call WP support for details.
  476.  
  477.      Version 5.1+ of WordPerfect adds partial support for the new
  478.      versions of the WPG files used by Presentations and WPWin60.
  479.      However, when WP5.1+ reads in these images, gradient patterns
  480.      will change to solid colors, and the color set of the image will
  481.      change to a 16-color palette. These changes may result in odd
  482.      color choices or substantial changes in how images print.

  485.      WHAT IS GRAPHCAT?

  488.      I've been collecting clip art for different projects. A small
  489.      book, some newsletters, signs, and still more pictorial projects.
  490.      I've drawn some, scanned some paper clip art, and bought some
  491.      disks of pictures. I was beginning to lose track of which disk
  492.      had what pictures. I needed an index, a printout of every graphic
  493.      I had, so I could keep them handy for reference.
  494.  
  495.      The WPG files shipped with WordPerfect have their own printed
  496.      picture indexes of art in the manual, but disks of PCX or TIF
  497.      files from computer show rack vendors are escapees from that
  498.      elusive paperless office we all keep hearing about. And clip art

  505.      disks are uneven; some of them are full disks of excellent art on
  506.      related topics, but others are totally unrelated pictures. Worse,
  507.      because there are several flavors of each of the graphics file
  508.      formats, some files will not be recognized by WordPerfect, and
  509.      will read as bad. Overall, clip art disks are worthwhile, but a
  510.      printed index would help sort the good files from the fuzzy junk.
  511.  
  512.      And the commercial clip art isn't much better. Oh, the graphics
  513.      are better, but the printed indexes are printed too small, or on
  514.      newsprint, or are all mixed in with the pictures of every other
  515.      graphic collection sold by that company.
  516.  
  517.      Meanwhile, my co-workers on a newsletter project wanted to see
  518.      all their clip art. I kept their graphics on a separate disk, but
  519.      they wanted paper copies to refer to, so they could tell me, "Use
  520.      that butterfly picture from page two." I began to create a sample
  521.      document, with every graphic shown, and the file names, and the
  522.      disk titles, and immediately found that there was too much work
  523.      involved. I had two options: I could delegate the job, or write a
  524.      macro to do the job. Since I couldn't find anyone who would spend
  525.      three hours to create the index for each disk, I wrote GRAPHCAT.
  526.      It's a lot faster than an assistant; it only takes from a few
  527.      seconds to a few minutes to complete the job, depending on the
  528.      speed of the computer and the size of the graphics files.
  529.  
  530.      GRAPHCAT makes this task easy, so easy that nearly no effort is
  531.      needed to create a new catalog for each directory or floppy of
  532.      pictures. If the macro is told the drive and path of the files,
  533.      the computer should do the rest.
  534.  
  535.      With just that information, the WordPerfect macro reads the
  536.      appropriate directory, identifies the graphics files, sets their
  537.      sizes, locations, and options in a catalog, and leaves that
  538.      catalog ready to print. Once the catalog is built, you may
  539.      preview it, print it, and save it if you want.
  540.  
  541.      WP51: WordPerfect corporation has a habit of tinkering with their
  542.      software. There are many different versions of WordPerfect 5.1
  543.      for MS-DOS systems. Some of their interim releases are mostly bug
  544.      fixes, and a few new drivers for new hardware; the new releases
  545.      also include minor new features. The 6/29/90 release included a
  546.      new macro command, {SYSTEM}entry, or in international editions,
  547.      {SYSTEM}29. It can copy a file name off a List Files (F5) menu.
  548.      GRAPHCAT uses that macro command, so users of earlier versions of
  549.      WP MUST upgrade.
  550.  
  551.      To check your WP51 release date, press Help (F3) from the
  552.      document screen of WP. The release date will be in the top right
  553.      corner of the introductory help screen. In 6.0, select Help, WP
  554.      Info. To upgrade to the newest release of WP 5.1+ or 6.0, call

  562.      the upgrade come with the disks, but be sure to check for, and
  563.      read, a README file on the first disk of each type. That README
  564.      file will list the features added to the program in that release.

  566.           Interim Releases of WP: Writing software in a macro language
  567.           is tricky, like controlling a rowboat by towing it from a
  568.           distance of five parsecs. However, GRAPHCAT for DOS has been
  569.           tested on all releases of WordPerfect 5.1, and the macro
  570.           language in WP 6.0 is feature-oriented rather than the old
  571.           keystroke-recorder, so all the macro features should work in
  572.           all future releases. BUT, sometimes new "features" disable
  573.           old features. If this happens, try turning "off" the new
  574.           features if the macros don't seem to like the new release.
  575.           When in doubt, write for support--there will be either a fix
  576.           or a new release, as needed, to fix any problems caused by
  577.           new features.
  578.  
  579.      INTERNATIONAL USERS:
  580.      --------------------
  581.  
  582.      All of Graphcat's internal macro commands and menu choices have
  583.      been set using international equivalents. GRAPHCAT should work
  584.      properly with ANY WP language module, and the column height
  585.      measurements will be accepted in your default measurement.
  586.      However, I have not been able to test every possible
  587.      international combination of software, interim release, and
  588.      hardware. Please write if you find that GRAPHCAT fails in any way
  589.      on your system. Also note: the interim release requirement of the
  590.      6/29/90 release applies to US WordPerfect 5.1. Other language
  591.      versions may require a newer release. If you aren't sure whether
  592.      your release of WP has the needed added feature, just go ahead
  593.      and run GRAPHCAT: the macro automatically tests for the needed
  594.      new feature.

  596.      WOOD CLIPS

  599.      The files with .WPG extensions are clip art. The patterns and
  600.      styles vary greatly, and they are provided as handy files for
  601.      testing GRAPHCAT. They are all wood cut engravings, known as Wood
  602.      Clips. A collection of 1.4Mb of clip art is included with the
  603.      registered edition of GRAPHCAT.

  683.      are kept sorted by what they are, such as DrawPerfect pictures
  684.      together as WPG files, or scanned artwork as TIF files, they will
  685.      be easier to keep track of, but if they are mixed together with
  686.      lots of different types of files, that's o.k., too.

  688.      WP51: You may enter up to three characters at this prompt--only
  689.      the file extension may be chosen in GRAPHCAT for WP51. However,
  690.      you can use standard DOS wild cards. These include the asterisk,
  691.      meaning "any characters, any length," and the question mark,
  692.      meaning "any character, just one." A request for files with the
  693.      P* or P?? extension would cause GRAPHCAT to hunt for files whose
  694.      extensions begin with P, including graphic files such as PCX and
  695.      PIC images.
  696.  
  697.      WP6: The default selection for files to examine is *.WPG, and you
  698.      may use standard DOS wild cards, as for WP51, to specify the
  699.      extension. In 6.x, you may also use wild cards for the file name.
  700.      For example, to look only at WPG files starting with W, enter
  701.      W*.WPG at this prompt.
  702.  
  703.      WP6 AND WP51: It's very easy to just choose * or *.* at this
  704.      prompt, and try to read every file. Don't do it! The wild cards
  705.      are intended for cataloging mixed disks of graphics files. If you
  706.      use the * choice for directories containing program files,
  707.      GRAPHCAT will run far more slowly, because it must load and
  708.      identify as bad every program file in the directory. For best and
  709.      fastest results, use the real file extension of the graphics you
  710.      are looking for, unless you really do intend * or *.* to mean ALL
  711.      the files in the directory.

  713.      CATALOG TITLE
  714.      -------------

  716.      The third prompt asks for a title, and the macro will place that
  717.      title in a header on each page of the catalog. I recommend
  718.      entering the name of the graphics collection or the name of the
  719.      archived backup for that collection, such as "Business Graphics--
  720.      BUSINESS.ZIP" in this area.

  737.      Enter the number of columns to use for the catalog. If you do not
  738.      want your catalog divided into columns, enter "1".

  740.      HEIGHT

  743.      Enter the height for the graphics. WordPerfect will calculate the
  744.      width to keep the graphics true to scale, room permitting. If
  745.      less than about twice the height of a graphic is available for
  746.      the width, some graphics in horizontal format will be compressed
  747.      to fit the column. Very wide graphics, like address labels or
  748.      scanned signatures, may require fewer columns than typical
  749.      images, for graphics of the same height. For four columns, a
  750.      height of one inch allows ample room for most images, and 28
  751.      images fit on one page. These combinations work well, and will
  752.      show on screen: five columns with a height of 3/4", resulting in
  753.      45 graphics per page, or 3 columns and 1.2" (18 per page), or two
  754.      columns and 1.8" (8 per page).
  755.  
  756.      International Users of WP51: the default height set by GRAPHCAT
  757.      is 1", but you may enter a graphic height as you normally would.
  758.      If your default measurement is centimeters, you do not need to
  759.      specifically tell WP and GRAPHCAT; the program and the macro will
  760.      use your default measurement unit automatically.
  761.  
  762.      International Users of WP6: the default height set by GRAPHCAT is
  763.      2.5cm if you have set WP to use centimeters, 25mm for
  764.      millimeters, or 1" if you use inches. Enter measurement values as
  765.      you do normally.
  766.  
  767.      WP6 ONLY: GRAPHIC ON DISK
  768.      -------------------------
  769.  
  770.      WP6 ONLY: You may choose to have GRAPHCAT retrieve all the
  771.      graphic images (default), or to let it read them off the disk as
  772.      it needs them, known as "Graphics on disk" or external graphics.

  774.      CAUTION: If you choose the "on disk" option, DO NOT SAVE the
  775.      catalog. Generally, printing it later will not work. If
  776.      cataloging a floppy disk of graphics, that disk must remain in

  793.      1) The starting file name is the name of the first file in
  794.           the directory that Graphcat should place in the
  795.           catalog. Click the search button to look in a directory
  796.           listing to find the file you want. If Graphcat notices
  797.           that you did not go to the end of the last directory of
  798.           graphics cataloged (within the same WP session), then
  799.           it will automatically display the next filename here
  800.           when the options box appears.

  802.      2) First page number. Set this manually, or if creating
  803.           several catalogs from a large directory of files, let
  804.           Graphcat set it for you as the last page number created
  805.           in the previous catalog, plus one.
  806.  
  807.      3) Number of images to catalog: This number will carry over
  808.           from one catalog to the next within the same WP
  809.           session. This number is fixed at 60 in the shareware
  810.           version.
  811.  
  812.      When cataloging very large directories of graphics, and
  813.      especially CD-ROMs of clip art, set the number of images to fill
  814.      a set of pages that you can easily print, perhaps two or four at
  815.      a time. After printing that catalog, run Graphcat again, and
  816.      click on OK in both boxes to continue the catalog where you the
  817.      previous set ended.
  818.  
  819.      LAYOUT OPTIONS
  820.      --------------
  821.  
  822.      These options are available only in the registered edition of
  823.      GRAPHCAT, and work similarly in WP51 and WP6x.
  824.  
  825.      CENTERING: By default, graphics are lined up on the left
  826.           side of each column. Enter 'y' here in WP51, or check
  827.           the box in WP6x, to center the graphics within the
  828.           columns.
  829.  
  830.      ALTERNATING PAGE HEADERS: By default, GRAPHCAT places the
  831.           page numbers at the top right corner of each page. If
  832.           you are going to print the catalog on both sides of the
  833.           paper, choose this option to let GRAPHCAT place the
  834.           page numbers on the outside corners of each page, top
  835.

  844.      HORIZONTAL CATALOGS (NEW in 3.2): By default, GRAPHCAT
  845.           builds catalogs arranged in order down each column,
  846.           like a newspaper. Choose this option to position the
  847.           graphics in order across the rows of the page, left-to-
  848.           right.
  849.  
  850.           Note: If you plan to make extensive editing changes to the
  851.           completed catalog, the default newspaper style can tolerate
  852.           more changes. The left-to-right format can easily become
  853.           disorganized and messy if you change page layout features.
  854.  
  855.      BORDER STYLE: GRAPHCAT adds a dashed border to each image by
  856.           default. You may select a different border here from
  857.           among those listed on-screen.
  858.  
  859.      FORCED MATCHING BOXES: Some users have told me that they
  860.           want all these borders to be the same size, no matter
  861.           what shape the graphic inside the box is. Not
  862.           recommended--this will distort or shrink the graphics,
  863.           just for a pretty page design: Back at the Columns
  864.           setting, choose one more column than you would normally
  865.           use for the image height, OR increase the image height
  866.           by about 30%. For example, try 5 columns of 1" graphics
  867.           or 4 columns of 1.3" graphics. Yuck. Nice square boxes.
  868.           Your choice.
  869.  
  870.  
  871.      WORKING ON THE GRAPHIC...
  872.      -------------------------
  873.  
  874.      After the last entry has been made, GRAPHCAT will begin loading
  875.      the graphics into the document. As each graphic is loaded, the
  876.      macro announces the new graphic on screen. When the directory of
  877.      graphics is large, this process will be considerably faster if
  878.      there is additional memory available for WordPerfect to use, but
  879.      hard disk space will be substituted automatically. If your system
  880.      does not have additional memory, be sure that your default
  881.      directory is set to a hard drive, rather than a floppy.
  882.  
  883.      If WordPerfect decides that a graphic in your sample directory is
  884.      not a proper graphics file, GRAPHCAT will add that file name to a
  885.      list of files that could not be loaded, and that list will be
  886.      printed at the end of the catalog. You may delete that message
  887.      after the catalog is prepared, or you may try to convert the bad
  888.      graphic or edit it with a graphics program, resave it, and run
  889.      GRAPHCAT again. Because not every version of every graphic format
  890.      is supported by WordPerfect, I prefer to leave the file list in
  891.

  897.      the catalog to identify a file that may be usable in other
  898.      software, but not in WordPerfect. (Or the disk may contain non-
  899.      graphic files, such as a README.1ST or FILE_ID.DIZ, and these
  900.      files will be listed automatically at the end of the catalog.)

  902.      When the catalog is finished, the screen display will be replaced
  903.      by the new catalog page. You may, and should, preview the page
  904.      before printing.
  905.  
  906.      GRAPHCAT may be stopped in mid-inventory by pressing the Cancel
  907.      key just once; there may be a time lag of a few seconds before
  908.      the macro stops. If you use the Cancel key to stop GRAPHCAT, the
  909.      macro will leave behind a warning at the top of the document that
  910.      the file is incomplete. The warning is just a comment box, and
  911.      may be deleted if the partial catalog is useful.
  912.  
  913.      IN GENERAL
  914.      ----------
  915.  
  916.      GRAPHCAT has error trapping routines built in to prevent garbage
  917.      entries, and to turn off Reveal Codes if needed, and will not try
  918.      to run if you start it without enough available open document
  919.      space. If you wish to import the catalog or the file list into a
  920.      document, run the macro first, and then add the other text or
  921.      formatting into the catalog or file list.
  922.  
  923.      GRAPHCAT builds very large documents. Your system will run faster
  924.      with 1) more memory, 2) better memory software, such as QEMM, and
  925.      3) more available disk space. This was true with WP51, and with
  926.      WP6, it is more important than ever.
  927.  
  928.      Since starting to catalog my clip art collection, I've found
  929.      pictures I didn't know I had, and I've used some of those in new
  930.      projects. Now that I don't have to hire extra help to create the
  931.      listings, I can find the picture I want in no time, and, better
  932.      yet, I can take the picture notebook with me to a co-worker, a
  933.      client, or a conference, and I don't need to borrow someone
  934.      else's computer and be at the mercy of someone else's operating
  935.      system.
  936.  
  937.      EDITING ALL THE IMAGES AT ONCE
  938.      ------------------------------

  940.      You may edit the finished catalog just as you would any other
  941.      document, but do turn on Reveal Codes (Alt-F3)--there are a lot
  942.      of codes in the document.

  944.      WP51: The borders may be changed by finding the [Fig Opt] code,
  945.      deleting it, and adding a new code in the same location. You can
  946.

  1009.      TROUBLE-SHOOTER'S GUIDE

  1012.      1) GRAPHCAT won't read my graphics files. Why?
  1013.  
  1014.      GRAPHCAT supports all graphics formats supported by WordPerfect,
  1015.      and that list is quite large, and the new WP6 reads several new
  1016.      file formats. However, the list is misleading. According to the
  1017.      WP51 instruction manuals, TIF and PCX files are supported. That
  1018.      is partially true. Sixteen-color PCX files are supported, but
  1019.      two-color PCX files are not. (The number of colors refers to the
  1020.      format of the image, and not the visible colors in the image.)
  1021.      TIF files come in multiple flavors, and only a few of them are
  1022.      supported. To make matters worse, many scanner programs create
  1023.      non-standard files, unreadable by WordPerfect.
  1024.  
  1025.      Before claiming that GRAPHCAT can't read a good graphics file,
  1026.      test the files by manually retrieving the suspect files, and see
  1027.      if they work. If they work manually, but not with GRAPHCAT,
  1028.      contact Science Translations for assistance. As of this writing,
  1029.      no graphics files have been found that work with WP but not with
  1030.      GRAPHCAT.
  1031.  
  1032.      2) My scanner makes graphics in several formats. Some are showing
  1033.      up reversed as white-on-black. What do I do?
  1034.  
  1035.      This is not a GRAPHCAT problem, but... Most scanner programs can
  1036.      save in several formats. Not all of these formats are the same
  1037.      "flavors" as those that WordPerfect likes (see #1 above). Try
  1038.      scanning an image normally, and then saving it in EVERY format
  1039.      that your scanner software supports. Run the whole bunch through
  1040.      GRAPHCAT to load them, and see which ones work. Use those formats
  1041.      for all your scanning. In general, IMG files seem to work most
  1042.      often, followed by PCX. (IMG is supported by WP51, but not by
  1043.      WP6.) TIF is frequently a problem, because of the difference
  1044.      between the multitude of TIF "flavors."
  1045.  
  1046.      3) My images are squashed, and printed much too narrow.
  1047.  
  1048.      Run GRAPHCAT again for that set of images, using fewer columns,
  1049.      but the same image height. Or, if you are comfortable with
  1050.      editing in Reveal Codes, you can delete the Column Def code, and
  1051.      replace it with a new code for fewer columns.

  1055.      WP51: On the completed catalog, change your initial base font.

  1066.      document initial font to fit the column settings you have chosen,
  1067.      if needed. However, your default initial font must be scalable
  1068.      for Graphcat to automatically set its size.

  1070.      5) My document prints slowly.
  1071.  
  1072.      The graphics quality setting affects speed--higher quality takes
  1073.      longer. If a coarse image is acceptable, choose Draft graphics
  1074.      quality before printing. Additional computer memory will help, as
  1075.      will a disk cache program. Ask your local dealer for help. In
  1076.      WP6, using the partial catalog feature to break your catalog into

  1080.      6) Only half of my catalog page prints.

  1082.      Some laser printers may not have enough internal memory to print
  1083.      a page of that complexity. On a laser printer, if the entire page
  1084.      does not print, try printing the page at a lower setting for
  1085.      graphics quality, or use fewer columns. Adding memory is a more
  1086.      expensive fix, but worthwhile.
  1087.  
  1088.      7) GRAPHCAT loads properly in WP51, and the big box appears on
  1089.      screen, but when I tell it what directory to catalog, An error
  1090.      message box appears. But I have checked--the files are good
  1091.      graphics files in the directory I've entered.
  1092.  
  1093.      This is an inconsistent error that occurs mostly with releases of
  1094.      WP from 6/90 to 12/90, although I have seen it more rarely with
  1095.      newer releases. Some of the settings in your configuration file
  1096.      are corrupt. To test this, start WP from the DOS prompt (No
  1097.      menus!) with the start up switch /x, like this:
  1098.      C:\WP51:> wp /x
  1099.      The x switch temporarily restores your copy of WP to the original
  1100.      defaults--it ignores all the choices you've made in Setup. Try
  1101.      running GRAPHCAT with this switch. If GRAPHCAT runs properly,
  1102.      then exit WP, restart WP normally, go into Setup and write down
  1103.      your options and settings. Next, exit WP, rename the file
  1104.      WP{WP}.SET to WPSET.OLD, and restart WP normally. Re-enter your
  1105.      options, and both WP and GRAPHCAT should run correctly.
  1106.      Alternative solution--upgrade to the newest release of WP; the
  1107.      problem does not seem to occur with any releases dated 9/91 or
  1108.      newer.
  1109.  
  1110.      8) GRAPHCAT runs perfectly, but I cannot print the result file.
  1111.      The error messages say I don't have enough memory.
  1112.  
  1113.      This is strictly a WP problem, and it is just what it says. Try
  1114.      running WP without any popup programs or TSR software, from the
  1115.

  1123.      separately, or when running GRAPHCAT, try using fewer
  1124.      columns--there will be more white space on each page, but less
  1125.      strain on limited system resources during printing.

  1127.      9) When I try to print a catalog of graphics found on a floppy
  1128.      disk, WP51 reads and writes to the floppy drive, and printing is
  1129.      extremely slow.
  1130.  
  1131.      WordPerfect 5.1 is placing its temporary print queue files on the
  1132.      floppy. There is an easy fix for this. Start WP with the command:
  1133.      WP /PF=(path)
  1134.      For example, try WP /pf-c:
  1135.      This command, which was added in the 3/90 release of WP, will
  1136.      divert the temporary printing files to the drive and path chosen.
  1137.      Printing speed should be improved considerably over allowing WP
  1138.      to use the floppy.
  1139.  
  1140.      10) I am using WP 5.1 dated 3/9/92 or newer, and whenever I run
  1141.      GRAPHCAT, the error box appears that says that the Sort option in
  1142.      List Files is turned off. Huh?
  1143.  
  1144.      The 3/9/92 interim release of WP 5.1 added a new feature--it can
  1145.      show directories in the list files screen in the order the files
  1146.      are on the disk. This is faster than the usual way, but less
  1147.      organized. Who wants a list of graphics that isn't in
  1148.      alphabetical order? To run GRAPHCAT, you must do what the box
  1149.      tells you: Enter Setup (Shift-F1), choose (3) Environment, (4)
  1150.      Document Management/Summary, (5) Sort List Files, and choose Yes,
  1151.      and then Exit (F7) to return to your document screen. GRAPHCAT
  1152.      will now run normally.
  1153.  
  1154.      11) The message "Position Hyphen" appears when I try to run
  1155.      GRAPHCAT on a directory of mixed graphics and text files. This
  1156.      only happens when some of the documents contain a "Hyphenation
  1157.      On" code, using the * choice on GRAPHCAT's extension line.
  1158.  
  1159.      The hyphenation message will occur only with hyphenated
  1160.      documents. You can avoid them by 1) Not using the * wild card
  1161.      extension, but instead choosing the extension of the graphics
  1162.      files, or 2) resetting the hyphenation options by pressing Setup
  1163.      (Shift-F1), (3)-Environment, (7) Prompt for Hyphenation, (1)
  1164.      Never, and Exit (F7)
  1165.  
  1166.      12) Sometimes when I use the * or *.* wild cards, GRAPHCAT loads
  1167.      a file as a graphic that isn't one. The document loads and prints
  1168.      normally, but the box is either empty or contains a random
  1169.      pattern.

  1177.      The * wild card choice was intended for reading disks containing
  1178.      mixed graphics in different formats, such as WPG and PCX and CGM
  1179.      graphics mixed together, NOT for attempting to load every program
  1180.      file on your hard drive in the attempt to see if any of them are
  1181.      graphics. GRAPHCAT will correctly identify nearly every file as a
  1182.      graphic or not a graphic, but there are exceptions. For example,
  1183.      try loading the WordPerfect file LIBRARY.STY as a graphic--the
  1184.      resulting empty graphics box is harmless, but it shouldn't
  1185.      happen, and since it does not cause any error messages, GRAPHCAT
  1186.      can't eliminate it.
  1187.  
  1188.      To avoid these problems, when cataloging a directory of mixed
  1189.      graphics and program files, use the appropriate extension, such
  1190.      as PCX or WPG on the second line of GRAPHCAT's menu, and save the
  1191.      wild card use for disks holding only graphics.
  1192.  
  1193.      13) Some of my images display or print in WP6 with very pale dots
  1194.      in the background.
  1195.  
  1196.      This happens occasionally with bitmapped images. To fix it from
  1197.      the finished catalog, press Graphics (Alt-F9), (1) Graphics, (4)
  1198.      Styles, page down to the style named GRAPHCAT, and choose (3)
  1199.      Edit, (3) Image Settings, (2) Color Adjust, (2) Contrast, type
  1200.      1.0, and press (Enter). Press Exit (F7) enough times to return to
  1201.      your document--all the images will be fixed at once.
  1202.  
  1203.      14) I'm running WP5.1+, and my WP.EXE file has a time setting of
  1204.      5:11am. Graphcat says my software is defective. OR: With 5.1+,
  1205.      5:11am edition and QEMM, when I first start Graphcat, QEMM
  1206.      announces an Exception 13 error.
  1207.  
  1208.      The 5:11am release was shipped with a defective {SYSTEM}entry
  1209.      command. Depending on your memory management software, macros
  1210.      that use that command will fail, and possibly crash WP as well.
  1211.      Notify WP that you have a 5:11am release with a defective
  1212.      {SYSTEM}entry command, and that your macros need that command to
  1213.      work. They should ship you the 5:11pm release, or newer, at no
  1214.      charge. WP's memo ID for this defect is 37979M.
  1215.  
  1216.      15) Graphcat goes into an infinite loop EVERY time I run it,
  1217.      counting bad graphics that don't exist forever, or until I hit
  1218.      the Cancel key.
  1219.  
  1220.      Go into WP's Setup (Shift-F1) screen, choose Location of Files,
  1221.      and check all the entries--at least one of your entries is to a
  1222.      directory that doesn't exist, probably the entry for Graphic
  1223.      files.
